In my experience, handmade items cannot be compared to mass produced items. It is very different to run a company that uses machines to pour their mass produced “perfect” looking candles versus a small business owner that is taking precious time away from their family to carefully craft an item with their own hands. When starting my business, I did a ton of research to make sure I found the “cleanest” materials when crafting my candles. As a mompreneur, it is imperative to create a product that minimizes the environmental carbon footprint on our planet Earth. Hence, the virgin coconut soy wax I use is vegan, gluten free, non-toxic, paraben free, phthalate free and biodegradable. In addition, when selecting the fragrance oils, I use ‘Clean Scents’ that are 100% phthalate-free. Furthermore, the aluminum tins I use as my candle vessels are reusable. Moreover, each one of my candles go inside their own hemp bag that is reusable and eco-friendly. Customers have shared with me how much they love these bags because they can easily store small items when traveling. Additionally, our packing peanuts are biodegradable and dissolve in water. They are made of 100% cornstarch. A great eco-friendly alternative to the traditional bubble wrap. Each order includes a personalized hand-written Thank You/Holiday card. Lastly, customers truly enjoy the luxurious experience when unboxing my candles.
2. Personal connections within your community.
My favorite aspect of owning my own business is building personal connections with local people that live in my community. I have truly enjoyed sharing every aspect of my business with the public (e.g., my candle making process, behind the scenes footage, candle photoshoots). I, indirectly, get to educate others on the health benefits of choosing to buy vegan & non-toxic candles that don’t give you headaches and are safe to burn around your loved ones, including our companions. Many people have shared with me that they really enjoy purchasing my handmade items because they appreciate the insight and education I provide.
3. Personalization aka customization.
Because I am able to hand craft my own candles, I feel the possibilities of personalizing, tailoring, or individualizing my product to meet my customer’s needs are pretty much endless. For instance, I am able to create individualized candle scents together with candle labels and even wrapping options (just to name a few examples). I’m not sure if all the other mass-produced candle companies can offer customization options to their customers. As a result, customers will be more inclined to purchase from you because you are able to provide a higher quality item that can be personalized depending on their unique needs. By default, this will end up setting you apart from the rest of the competition and giving you the necessary edge to continue to grow your business.
